Abstract

This paper is intended to prompt a reflection on the issue of civil wars based on Comunidades rotas, a monograph on contemporary civil wars by Spanish historians Javier Rodrigo and David Alegre. By means of contrasting a series of various contributions from social sciences, the monograph offers a historiographic perspective, focusing on war studies as an exercise in historical reflection. The dialogue proposed in this paper is founded on the principles of polemology and the theory of strategy as developed in the Portuguese school of strategy, seen from a strongly historical-philosophical perspective. Ultimately, it is meant to explore the very nature of war and of civil wars in particular, as well as to reflect on the potential of war cycles as part of an interpretative approach to the study of armed conflicts. To that purpose, Javier Rodrigo’s and David Alegre’s work proposes a crucial diagnosis.
